چکیده

Let P be a simple polygon on the plane. Two vertices of P are visible if the open line segment joining them is contained in the interior of P . In this paper we study the following questions posed in [5, 6]: (1) Is it true that every non-convex simple polygon has a vertex that can be continuously moved such that during the process no vertex-vertex visibility is lost and some vertex-vertex visibility is gained? (2) Can every simple polygon be convexified by continuously moving only one vertex at a time without losing any internal vertex-vertex visibility during the process? We provide a counterexample to (1). We note that our counterexample uses a monotone polygon. We also show that question (2) has a positive answer for monotone polygons.

Convexifying Polygons Without Losing Visibilities

We show that any simple n-vertex polygon can be made convex, without losing internal visibilities between vertices, using n moves. Each move translates a vertex of the current polygon along an edge to a neighbouring vertex. In general, a vertex of the current polygon represents a set of vertices of the original polygon that have become co-incident. We also show how to modify the method so that ...

Convexifying Monotone Polygons

This paper considers reconngurations of polygons, where each polygon edge is a rigid link, no two of which can cross during the motion. We prove that one can reconngure any monotone polygon into a convex polygon; a polygon is monotone if any vertical line intersects the interior at a (possibly empty) interval. Our algorithm computes in O(n 2) time a sequence of O(n 2) moves, each of which rotat...

On the VC-Dimension of Visibility in Monotone Polygons

We show that the VC-dimension of visibility on the boundary of a monotone polygon is exactly 6. Our lower bound construction matches the best known lower bound for simple polygons.

Generating Random Polygons with Given Vertices

The problem of generating \random" geometric objects is motivated by the need to generate test instances for geometric algorithms. We examine the speciic problem of generating a random x-monotone polygon on a given set of n vertices. Here, \random" is taken to mean that we select uniformly at random a polygon, from among all those x-monotone polygons having the given n vertices. We give an algo...

Reconstructing Generalized Staircase Polygons with Uniform Step Length

Visibility graph reconstruction, which asks us to construct a polygon that has a given visibility graph, is a fundamental problem with unknown complexity (although visibility graph recognition is known to be in PSPACE). We show that two classes of uniform step length polygons can be reconstructed efficiently by finding and removing rectangles formed between consecutive convex boundary vertices ...
